Today, Tuesday 15 January 2008, the Kenyan Members of Parliament elected Kenneth Marende (ODM) as the speaker of the 10th Parliament.

This is a fantastic triumph of ODM over Kibaki and underlines how difficult it will be for the Kibaki to govern after the elections that we believe he stole.

Marende, a 52-year-old lawyer received 105 votes, to 101 for Kibaki’s candidate, Ole Kaparo. While ODM had the most seats in parliament, neither party had the two-thirds majority needed to elect the speaker in a first round vote. Results of voting for the speaker

Notable Quotes During Today’s Parliamentary Session

“We went into the elections with a secret ballot and then you stole the vote,” William Ruto (ODM) commented about secret balloting for the speaker

“This will no doubt go down in the annals of history of this house as the most hotly contested election of speaker,” Marende said in his victory speech.

“We are under duty to uphold democracy. This should remind all of us that indeed democracy can work and that it is not alien to our land and our people,” Marende said
